Aye. The ayes are 17; the nays are zero. A majority of all members having voted in the affirmative, the bill passes. Mr. Decker, do you have any additional resolutions on today's Calendar. 6/7/12 - STATED - 2ND READING
A privileged resolution authorizing the Committee on Labor and Civil Service to hold public hearings reviewing past and ongoing external evaluations of the Philadelphia Fire Department's management, operations, structure, system performance and service, with a particular focus on determining if adequate safety controls were in place during the warehouse fire of April 9, 2012, introduced by Councilman Kenney.
Thank you, Mr. President. I move the adoption of the resolution and would like a minute to speak on it. (Duly seconded.)
Thank you, Mr. President. Obviously on April 9th, we as a city and the Fire Department as a 6/7/12 - STATED - 2ND READING family lost two wonderful people who have committed their lives, one a little older, one younger, to the service and safety of our citizens. I think it's appropriate and urge the support of the Council to use the Committee on Labor, not necessarily to cast blame on anyone, but to review all of the investigatory information that has come as a result over the summer and into the fall so that we can limit the opportunity for this tragedy to happen again. We as a city and the Administration has asked this department and these men and women to do a lot more with a lot less. The least we can do is to make sure we review these kind of tragic incidents to make sure that they don't happen again or limit the opportunity for them to happen again. My condolences to the Neary and Sweeney families again, and we've all expressed those. And we've lost firefighters and police officers in the 6/7/12 - STATED - 2ND READING past and it's always been a sad situation. But I think we take the appropriate measures and the appropriate attention to making sure or ensuring that it might not happen again, and I appreciate my colleagues support and I appreciate the support of all the firefighters who are here today. Thank you, Mr. President. (Applause.)
Thank you, Councilman. The Chair recognizes Councilman Henon.
Thank you, Mr. President. I just want to echo my colleague, Councilman Kenney, on his sentiments about the tragic loss of our two fallen heroes of the Fire Department. I fully support his resolution and urge Council to do the same. I think it's our responsibility to have a hearing and indeed find the facts and the truth out about the situation, the assessment and 6/7/12 - STATED - 2ND READING the review of the data that has been collected as a result of that. And it's time for us to -- if there's something broken, we need to fix it, and it's time for the families and the firefighters in the City of Philadelphia to heal. Worker safety is paramount, especially with our first responders. I fully support the resolution. Thank you. (Applause.)
Thank you, Councilman. With that, it's been moved and properly seconded. Those in favor? (Aye.)
The ayes have it. The resolution is adopted. (Applause.)
