Council President Verna

The 12/7/06 STATED - SECOND-READING CALENDAR Chair recognizes Councilman Ramos.

Councilman Ramos

Madam President, I have been a lifelong resident of North Philadelphia, and this past Monday, at the opening of the Pearl Theater, it was a very big day for all of in us the City of Philadelphia, but for those of us especially who are neighbors of North Philadelphia. The facilities, Madam President, were just splendid, magnificent. Suburbia had come to North Philadelphia. Everyone there was full of smiles and elation -- the Temple students; the president of Temple University; the Councilman that worked so had on this, my Councilman, Councilman Clarke; Bart Blattstein, the developer; beautiful faces of children; smiles and elation of the people of North Philadelphia. This morning, abruptly, that smile and that elation that I felt was removed from me and probably removed 12/7/06 STATED - SECOND-READING CALENDAR from many people in the City of Philadelphia because of an unfortunate incident, violent incident, that occurred outside of the movie theater. I had promised my family that I would take them to that new theater this weekend. I will keep my promise to my family, which includes two teenage granddaughters. I believe that all of the people of Philadelphia need not to give up to the threats of violence but to face it head-on and not to permit that development and the wellbeing of our people to be just threatened by anyone at any given time, that we all need to come together and make sure that these projects that help the community do become successful, and we can only do so by taking a stand. We will make sure, and I know that that smile on Councilman Darryl Clarke was also faded on this day, as all of us, but we cannot let ourselves 12/7/06 STATED - SECOND-READING CALENDAR be intimidated. And we need to make sure that these projects that are worth and of value to the people and especially this part Philadelphia, North Philly, that they and that we have safe surroundings, a safe environment so that we can make this Pearl Theater what we believe it will be, a great asset to the community a great asset to the City of Philadelphia. Thank you, Madam President, for allowing me to speak on this matter.

Council President Verna

You are welcome. The Chair recognizes Councilman Kenney.

Councilman Kenney

Thank you, Madam President. I'd just like to quickly commend and recognize our three new colleagues: Councilmember Campbell, Greenlee, and Savage. I've worked with them, and all 12/7/06 STATED - SECOND-READING CALENDAR of us have worked with them in the last week or so since they have been sworn in, and they have actually hit the ground running. They run their committees in a very professional and a very good way, and I think that the people in the districts they represent and the City as a well-served by these three people, and I look forward to a long-term relationship with them in this Council. Thank you.

Council President Verna

Thank you very much. The Chair recognizes Councilwoman Tasco.

Councilwoman Tasco

Thank you, Madam President. I'd just like to support Councilman Ramos's comment. We were having the Council's Public Safety and Public Health and Human Services Committee on the blueprint for a safer Philadelphia last evening at William 12/7/06 STATED - SECOND-READING CALENDAR Penn High School when the shooting occurred. And I just say to all of Philadelphians: Don't let a couple of thugs frighten us away from such a beautiful complex and give the community support as well as Temple University and all of the wonderful things that are going on on north Broad Street. I am proud to go to that neighborhood. My church is at 12th and Cecil B. Moore. And let's just give them all the support that we can.

Council President Verna

Thank you very much. Are there any other speeches on the part of the Majority? Any other speeches on the part of Majority? (No response.)

Council President Verna

Again, the Chair recognizes Councilwoman Tasco for a motion to adjourn.

Councilwoman Tasco

Madam 12/7/06 STATED - SECOND-READING CALENDAR President, I move that Council stand adjourned until Thursday, December 14 2006, at 10 a.m. (Motion seconded.)

Council President Verna

It has been moved and seconded that Council stand adjourned until Thursday, December 14, 2006. All those in favor will say aye. Those opposed? The ayes have it, and the motion carries.
