And a resolution honoring the Wonderful Women of West and Southwest Philadelphia on the occasion of International Women's Day, for their tireless work to uplift West and Southwest Philadelphians: Tanja Carter, Callalily Cousar, Constance Harris Crews, Terrilyn Donnell, Bettye Ferguson, Rachel Honore, Cheryl Jackson, Edie Owens-Hightower, Tammy Pullins, Tamara N. Staley, Lorraine Thomas, Kendra Van de Water -(Applause.) Stated Meeting 92 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING
-- Kianna Bingham -(Applause.) Stated Meeting 93 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING
Thank you, Council President. Before I move for adoption, I would like to take a few moments to speak about the heroes honored in my resolution. When I come to work every day at City Hall, I'm buffered by the fact that back home in West and Southwest Philadelphia there is a village of hard-working and deeply passionate women Stated Meeting 94 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING laboring to better our neighborhoods, a team that I rely on each and every day to make sure that what we do right here in this Chamber makes an impact on communities like Kingsessing, Cobbs Creek, Mantua, and everywhere in between. Prior to my time on Council, I too was a servant in my neighborhood, including serving as President for Garden Court Community Association, so I know how much our neighbors need community-based organizations, which are overwhelmingly led by Black women, to bridge the gap between City Hall and City streets and how the women who donate their time to keep them running rarely receive the gratitude they deserve. That's why in honor of International Women's Day, I wanted to praise the fearless female community leaders committed to improving the lives of West and Southwest Philadelphians. And I'll admit, 13 women in one resolution is a bit out of the ordinary, Stated Meeting 95 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING but frankly it was impossible to move forward without including all of them. West and Southwest experience a disproportionate share of gun violence plaguing our city, and we need partners like Tanja Carter to help us beautify our streets and keep young people safe. Miss Cheryl, the leader of the Concerned Block Captains of West and Southwest Philadelphia and a member of Philadelphia More Beautiful, is another fearless advocate dedicated to giving our communities the municipal services they deserve. Meanwhile, Ms. Cousar has been enriching -(Applause.)
Ms. Cousar has been enriching young people in East Parkside for almost a century by exposing them to educational experiences and historical places like Stated Meeting 96 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING Underground Railroad sites. And students in Southwest can count on Miss Connie to open doors that allow them -(Applause.)
-- to attend college loan-free by helping them obtain athletic scholarships. On the western end of the Third District, Miss Terrilyn and her team at Community -(Applause.)
-- and her team at Community of Compassion keep their lights on and their doors open until 2:00 a.m., giving young people a safe place to go and participate in enrichment activities when they would otherwise be on the streets. And it would be impossible to Stated Meeting 97 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING talk about grassroots violence prevention in West and Southwest without talking about Kendra Van de Water. (Applause.)
She can always be counted on to give young people the support they need and the love they deserve. And in Belmont, parents know that if their budget is just a bit too tight for essentials like diapers or even car seats, Miss Bettye has got their backs. (Applause.)
Parents can also count on Rachel Honore to help find and apply to quality education centers that provide their children with the social, emotional, and literacy skills they need to succeed in the Stated Meeting 98 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING classroom. And thanks to Edie Owens-Hightower's legendary -(Applause.)
Thanks to her legendary events for back to school and other community milestones, our young people won't ever be without essentials -(Applause.)
-- like backpacks and pencils, because she does not wait for Christmas day to give Kingsessing's children the items they need to thrive. (Applause.)
In Mantua, Tammy Pullins and her Bread for Stated Meeting 99 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING Life Ministry at the Transfiguration Baptist Church fights against food insecurity by providing thousands of hot meals, continuing this community's rich history of neighbors helping neighbors. And Ms. Tamara Staley, affectionately known as Miss T, is the President and CEO of the Philadelphia Juneteenth Family and is no stranger to most of us in this Chamber. Her legendary events attract tens of thousands of attendees and build community across the African diaspora. And our Southwest neighbors know they can always turn to Lorraine Thomas -(Applause.)
-- the so-called Mayor of Southwest Philadelphia, for a kind gesture, a piece of advice, or connection to a resource. And last, but certainly not Stated Meeting 100 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING least, is Miss Doreen, an incredibly humble and fearless advocate for Kingsessing. (Applause.)
Whether it's working with her fellow Vigilante Grannies to keep young people safe around their schools, founding an award-winning community garden, or holding the City accountable, Miss Doreen is living proof to her neighbors that they can get things done as long as they persevere. I see my work as a District Councilmember as a more formal way to supplement and support the work of these devoted -- that those devoted women do each and every day, often for little or no money or recognition. I am humbled to acknowledge them here today as well as the many other unsung heroes across my Council district who dedicate themselves to making West Stated Meeting 101 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING and Southwest Philadelphia safe, vibrant, and joyful places to live. I'd be remiss if I didn't also take a moment to acknowledge the hard work of the women that make up the vast majority of my City Council staff. This includes my extremely compassionate constituent services team, Alexis Wright-Whitley, Ciani Beatty -(Applause.)
-- and Kianna Bingham. I am so thankful for their help in providing best-in-class service to our constituents, and that they go above and beyond by working closely with me to embed constituent concerns into legislative work, like my JustServicesPHL campaign. And seated behind me every Thursday in this Council Chamber is my whip-smart Legislative Director, Cydnea Shearlds. Stated Meeting 102 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING (Applause.)
As we enter budget season, West and Southwest Philadelphians can rest easy because Cydnea is on the job uncovering every stone and confirming every detail so that we can authorize a budget that centers our community. I would also like to thank Tyler Wood, the newest member of my team, for jumping right into the deep end -(Applause.)
-- and helping our office run smoothly during a particularly chaotic time. We can always count on her for a warm smile and to make sure we're all doing okay during stressful days. And thank you to my zoning and development intern, Morgan Stated Meeting 103 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING Allgrove-Hodges, for her prioritizing real-world experience as part of her education -(Applause.)
-- and making an impact in the process. I cannot wait to see what you accomplish. And, lastly, a profound thank you to my Chief of Staff, Mariya Khandros. (Applause.)
I could not have asked for a better confidant, team leader, and friend. You keep the ship running steadily and you help me to be the best version of myself in City Hall. I would ask for all of these wonderful women to stand and to be recognized. Stated Meeting 104 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING (Applause.)
And with that, Council President, I move for the adoption of the resolution.
Thank you. Councilwoman, thank you. Councilwoman, did I hear you say Tiger Woods?
She's as effective as Tiger Woods, but, no, her name is Tyler Wood.
I was like, where you at, right? In my retirement I might need some golf tips. You know what I mean? Okay. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Councilwoman. The motion has been made. Can I get a second? (Duly seconded.)
It's been moved and properly seconded. Stated Meeting 105 3/9/2023 3/9/23 - STATED - 2ND READING All in favor? (Aye.)
The ayes have it. Thank you, Councilwoman. Thank you all. Congratulations to you all.
And a resolution renaming the 400 block of 60th Street in honor of the life and legacy of community and religious leader Imam Asim Abdur-Rashid of Masjid Mujahideen, introduced today by Councilwoman Gauthier.
The Chair again recognizes Councilwoman Gauthier.
