Councilman Johnson

Thank you, Council President. I probably should have gave my brief remarks regarding Bill No. 190712 prior to the vote, but I do thank all my colleagues for the support of it. Two aspects I just wanted to address just for the record. The first aspect is, the current health center, which has been underutilized over the last several years, just became a Stated Meeting October 17, 2019 10/17/19 - STATED - 2ND READING warehouse for different City agencies over the past few years. It will be replaced by an economic development project regarding student housing and also commercial development along that corridor at Broad and South Street. The developer has also engaged in an ownership minority joint venture partnership with an African American developer, which is normally not the case when these types of projects come forward. Also there's a 10 percent set-aside for African American minority businesses to house their businesses at this particular location, which is not normally the case when these development projects come forward. And also we have an aggressive EOP plan to make sure that the minority development and participation on the actual building of the actual facility. And two subway stops down from this health center is a brand new health center called Health Center 1 at Broad and Morris Street. Stated Meeting October 17, 2019 10/17/19 - STATED - 2ND READING It's a health center/recreation center/library. So in the event that there's a world catastrophe in the Second Councilmanic District, people can go there for shelter. I just wanted to address some issues and concerns that some individuals brought to my attention. And also regarding the land disposition process, you have appointed me to PIDC Board, and so we work very closely with the Board members as well as the Executive Director, John Grady, again focusing on issues of minority participation and inclusion. And so any issues that any organizing organizations may have, we will address them as we go through this process. And so I just wanted to thank everyone for their vote, but I wanted to also state for the record the process that has taken place to get us to this point. Thank you very much, Council Stated Meeting October 17, 2019 10/17/19 - STATED - 2ND READING President.

Council President Clarke
