Thank you, Mr. President. This summer I had a couple of my interns write letters to Congressman Elijah Cummings while he was under the cloud of President Trump. Today we mourn a great man, fearless leader, a titan for civil rights, Congressman Elijah Cummings. He believed as I do, that diversity should never be viewed as a problem but instead should be viewed as a promise. Stated Meeting October 17, 2019 it appropriate given his wonderful history and his life story that we should acknowledge the important work he's done and the courage for all the work he's done on behalf of people of color and those who want to do the right thing. This past June he spoke at the Johns Hopkins University graduation, and I want to close out by quoting his remarks whereby he said, and I quote, "You must be agents of changes, for you have been blessed with an awesome education. You are the ones that can guide us the rest of the way. I've often said that our children are the living messengers we send to a future we will never see," end quote. Thank you, Council President. And I've been advised that we should stand in acknowledgement of his work and his passing. (Moment of silence.)

Thank you, Council President. I just wanted to remind and offer these words in reference to this Saturday, which is the annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks Walk for the Philadelphia region. It will be at Citizens Bank Park this Saturday, October 19th. The registration starts at 8:30. The opening ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. As many people in this room and who can hear the sound of my voice know that my son Julian is on the autism spectrum. We've been very engaged in our fight against autism for a number of years. For various years, my wife has chaired the Autism Speaks Walk. This year our fundraising goal is $453,000 and we're about $300,000. So we're getting close to our goal, and every day we get one step closer to providing more resources and more support for families, Stated Meeting October 17, 2019 children, caregivers, and others who are dealing with autism. So for those of you who want to join me, we will be out there, as we are every year, on Saturday. Look for the green balloons. Thank you, Council President.

I had the honor and the privilege to work with him as a staffer on the Hill many years ago, and when I heard this morning that he was gone, it was quite a loss. It's quite a loss. And even though Congressman Cummings is not a Philadelphian, Philadelphia really lost and cities like Philadelphia all across the country, we really lost a champion in Elijah Stated Meeting October 17, 2019 wanted to thank Councilwoman Brown for that acknowledgment and for that stand in recognition of all of his years of uncompromising integrity and service to our country.
