Thank you, Madam President. Today I would like to say a special thank you for some people who made life a lot more pleasant to 500 women and children who live in shelters last night. A special thanks goes to Neil Stein of Stripe Bass, Gabe Marabello of Avenue B. They provided the food. It was served by their people and also by people from the Restaurant School and those from the School of Culinary Arts. We'd SPEECHES like to thank Giuseppe Sana of La Familia who provided all the desserts. Kevin Parker of Simply Delicious Caterers who certainly works out 3801 in addition to his own restaurant in Center City. We want thank Point Breeze Performing Arts for certainly bringing Santa and Reindeer there and AmeriChoice for have take a picture with every child. We would like thank Beverly Smith and Brenda Flowers from Caring about Sharing for helping to donate toys and transport toys there. We want to that my friend Jean Bun (ph) Professional Health Care Institute who kind of headed the committee to pull it all together. You know, it takes a lot to make it happen and we want to thank her and Al Williams from American Community Partners and John Coates. Many of you know him from Redevelopment Authority VPRC. He worked very, very hard on this committee to make it possible. Toys were provided by Robert Bevin from Friend Mutual Life Insurance and the Marine Corps Toys for Tots. And all the children and shelters chosen, many from West Philadelphia but other areas of the City were chosen by Mike Nardone for whom you passed a resolution today since he's leaving as deputy SPEECHES managing director of Special Needs Housing, and also a wonderful Lou Salam (ph) whom I've worked for in his department since 1971 and Judy McDaniel from OESS. Also we had Tiger Man who we've honored here who gave a talk to the children about anti-guns and anti-violence. Thank you all and we hope to honor them sometime in January next year. Thank you again. Thank you to all. And thank Mary Mason. She and her son came and ate with the children and the mothers and we thank her. Thank you, Madam President.
Thank you. The Chair recognizes Councilman DiCicco.
Thank you. I forgot. Our own colleague, Councilman Longstreth came and he gave us a special rendition of Jingle bells. Thank you Thach.
Thank you, Madam President. Having on two occasions this past week made private pleas to Mayor Street that he in a humanitarian sense at least recognize the existence of Lt. Mary Collar, invite her into the office and explain whatever position he is taking with respect to the fire fighters contract, but that he recognize not only her rights under the first amendment, but her rights as a human being to be treated as a human being. I, therefore, make this public plea today to him to stop playing the role of a hard person who has no human feelings. I believe he must have human feels and I think they ought to express them by inviting the lieutenant into his office and explaining his position whether they an agree or disagree thank you, Madam President.
Thank you. The Chair recognizes Councilman Nutter.
Thank you, Madam President. Madam President, this might be somewhat unusual, but I think still important. After a conversation with Councilman Rizzo and our majority whip Councilwoman Tasco, I at least wanted to in our place in a public way ask if SPEECHES we might have some moment of silence, whether sitting or standing, to recognize the great loss that our friend and colleague Councilwoman Miller experienced earlier this week with the passing of her mother. And whatever the President thinks is the appropriate procedure, I just wanted to at least put that on the floor.
Since you are now making that motion, I suggest that we all stand up for a moment of silence for Councilwoman Miller's mother. (Moment of silence.)
Thank you. The Chair recognizes Councilman DiCicco.
Thank you, Madam President. I'd just like to take this time to publicly thank my colleague Councilman Nutter for his willingness to hold Bill 000314. It's been a very strenuous time for some of us, maybe all of us. I got involved in this process back in June. Some days I wonder why I did that and I regret it at times, but his willingness to at least give us the opportunity to continue the process, as he SPEECHES mentioned in his statement. Going forward, I know his intentions are. I said that back in June and that's why, I guess, I got involved in that discussion from June. And I think at the end of the day sometime between now and July 1st the cooperation of the hospitality industry and other Members of Council, I think we'll be able to come to some meaningful resolution. It's important an important issue to him as it is an important issue to all of us, secondhand smoke. But I think there's an issue of fairness to all concerned from patrons to business owners and there's a certain cost involved in accommodating some of those things that we'd like to see accomplished, and I think that goes to the heart of what we're trying to try to come to some conclusion over the next few months. So, again, I want to thank Councilman Nutter for holding Bill 000314. Thank you, Madam President.
Thank you. Are there any other speeches on behalf of the majority? Seeing none, are there any speeches on behalf of the minority? SPEECHES The Chair recognizes Councilman O'Neill.
