Good morning. Heavenly Father, we thank you for this day. We thank you for the lives of all who are here, who are elected to serve your people and all people. We ask you, Lord, to give us the wisdom to know what to do, the wherewithal and the passion always to care to do the things that we should. bless all across this country who are worried about the snow, the snowstorm. Bless people who are in nursing homes and boarding homes. Bless people who are ill and unable to get up. Bless people who don't know who they are and where they are. Lord, we ask a special blessing upon those who are homeless, for those who don't know where they'll live or how they're going to get their next meal or how they're going to pay their mortgage or rent. And, Father, we always give you the praise and honor. We know that all good things come from you. And, finally, we say now unto him, who is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding praise, to the only wise God our savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever more. Thank you, Madam President. Today we are thrilled to recognize and congratulate the League Philadelphia on the occasion of their 90th Anniversary. Whereas, the League of Women Voters of Philadelphia is the organization where hands-on work to safeguard democracy leads to civic improvement; and Whereas, the League of Women Voters is a non-partisan political organization that has fought since 1920 to improve our system of government and impact public policy through citizen education and advocacy;
Whereas, League members are constantly striving to serve their communities to make strong, safe, fair and vibrant places to live; and Whereas, the League of Women Voters of Philadelphia believes in representative government and in the individual liberties established in the Constitution of the United States; and Whereas, the League of Women always worked to promote the values and the processes of representative government; and
Whereas, the League of Women Voters of Philadelphia collaborates with other organizations to achieve mutual goals, increase civic participation, create lasting change in the community and to make democracy work; and Whereas, the League, for 90 years, has held the public trust by respectfully bringing elected leaders and the public together through non-partisan, civil means and through thoughtfully advancing solutions; and Whereas, Philadelphia has benefited tremendously from the countless volunteer hours donated by League members over its 90-year history of enhancing our democracy. Resolved, by the Council of the City of Philadelphia, that City Council hereby recognizes and congratulates the League of Women Voters of Philadelphia on their 90th Anniversary. Further resolved, that an engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to the leadership and the membership of the League of Women Voters as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative body. Thank you, Councilwoman Blondell, for introducing this resolution. It's amazing to me that just over 90 years ago women didn't even have the right to vote. And so we stand here before you and I look out and I see elected women and I see a tremendous amount of powerful women and elected women in City Council and it gives me great pride to represent this organization that is hitting their 90th anniversary. So thank you very much for taking the time to acknowledge us. And behind me stands this wonderful, amazing group of women who work tirelessly, who work hours beyond understanding as a volunteer. We are a volunteer organization. So these are the women and this is the Board who dedicate their lives to making sure and securing to receive trustworthy and accurate information about their elected officials and about candidates. So please take the time to acknowledge them. This is Jody Bender, Audrey Ross, Rachel Lawton, who is our Vice-President, and Alison Rickets. (Applause.)
As expected, due to the lovely weather, we don't have some of our members with us, but, again, thank you so much for this acknowledgment. Please look forward to the future. Thank you, Madam President. I will be brief, because the snow is pending, but I felt compelled to talk a little bit about the hearing held yesterday by the Public Health and Human Services Committee chaired by Councilwoman Tasco and in part spurred on by the longtime interest of Councilwoman Brown on the whole issue of fitness and nutrition. Quite frankly, when I first came to this Council, that was not high on my priority list, but due to the dogged nature of insistence of my colleague, I was educated on the issue, and it is compelling to know that there's a synonymous map to foods that are unhealthy to loss of health due to organ failure, diabetes and the like. And it is important that this committee, this body, did something and started to move that issue to the forefront of our thinking. A lot of times because of the going on in the world, budget crisis and other things, we miss the small, yet important things of our public health, and I want to thank publicly my colleagues for keeping that on the forefront of discussion in this body. Thank you, Madam President.

It seems we spent some time in the end of Council the last couple weeks saying good-bye to staff members who are leaving us, and I guess that's the price you pay for having good people. When they have other opportunities, they seize it. Since I've been here, my Legislative Director has been a young man named Kevin Boyle, and he reminds me, by the way, how young he is because he I started working here in Council in 1980, he was not yet born. But in spite of that, I'm going to say nice things about him. Kevin has been a credit to my office and I believe to the entire City Council. He was key in the issues that I've been involved with. He always worked hard, kept me well informed and offered sound advice that, at least when I was thinking straight, I actually listened to. Kevin is leaving tomorrow to pursue a goal that I think many of us are aware of, and he'll be officially announcing that very soon.
