Thank you, Mr. President. Before I say what I have to say, I want to say to my good friend and colleague happy birthday to Councilman Green, who -(Applause.)
-- who has still not gotten over the MenzFit Who Wore It Best vote, but, you know, it's okay.
I heard it was a recount and whole thing. But I do want to say something. I was walking Captain Jack this morning, Mr. President, and I ran into one of my crossing guards, who always gives a wave and a nod, and she said to me, congratulations on your present. And I said, what present? I thought it was a holiday present. Stated Meeting December 14, 2017 said, no. From sweet, sweet Alabama. That present that came up that we got electing U.S. Senator Jones and, most importantly, the coalition he was able to build of conservatives, moderates, African Americans, people of the Jewish faith, women pulled him together, and we have not seen a coalition like that since Obama. He turned a red state blue. He was able to do it. Every vote does count. He only did it by 1.5 percent, which came out to less than 20,000 votes. I think this was unprecedented. I think it was a good omen of things to come, but Alabama has been historically like that. The Pettus Bridge and the individuals that were burned in the church, U.S. Representative Jones was one of the people who wind up bringing justice to those young ladies by prosecuting them. So I appreciate what happened. Stated Meeting December 14, 2017 what might be possible in 2018. Thank you, Mr. President.
Thank you, Council President, and I will be brief. For those who are just tuning in and missed a long Council session, this is the end of year wrap-up, but what you've just witnessed is democracy at its best. And I mean at its best. We are the most transparent, the most inclusive, and the most accessible government body in the United States of America, and that's right here in the City of Philadelphia. So I am proud of all of the stakeholders, every citizen of this city and, most important, all of my colleagues and Stated Meeting December 14, 2017 to what our Philadelphians expect us to do here as a body that creates policy for the greater good of the City of Philadelphia. So with that, in civility, I want to wish not just Councilman Green a happy birthday but I want to wish everybody a happy holiday and a safe holiday and look forward to continuing to do the hard work that we do every single day, not just when we're in session, because I think a former employer of you, Council President, and Mayor used to always say plan our work and work our plan, and I think that's what we do every single day for everybody, every citizen of the City of Philadelphia. We've done it about 18 or 19 years now, and we want to say a special thank you. Rochelle Bilal was there serving people for hour after hour, and Patty Jackson and Lady B were so popular. Everybody wanted to dance with them. I want to say a special thanks to IBEW. They came and even sent a check yesterday to make sure we had enough. The Masonic Temple across the street always comes. They make a contribution and we put their banner up. We want to thank Fresh Grocer and Shop Rite. We want to thank CHOP, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the Kevin Parker Companies, Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food Cafe, who always does our food and who will have our food here tomorrow from noon on. We want to thank Aramark. We Stated Meeting December 14, 2017 Jim Kenney, who said he would contribute, and he did, and he came. We want to thank Penn Mutual. Jim McNichol and the Convention Center are wonderful. We want to thank them for everything, not just for serving, not just for keeping the place looking great but for their officers, for all that they do to always help out there to make it successful. PJ, Dick Villa, PECO, Toyota, Philly Cuts at 43rd and Chestnut. You all know they cut hair for free, and they also -- you had Dobbins students there again this year, who are training to give haircuts. They come and they help there too. Mural Arts, Penn, University of Penn, they had 150 volunteers alone. Drexel, Sweeney for Brandywine and -- I'm sorry. I'm rushing. I'm rushing. Certainly all my universities and hospitals and University of the Sciences, we thank them as well. Intech, Walmart, FOP, they do so much to help us, and they Stated Meeting December 14, 2017 us donations. They help us to provide bikes, food, and they helped us at Thanksgiving with food as well. Coca-Cola, SEPTA, Philadelphia Federation of Teachers where children who don't have take collections and give for those who have nothing. We're very, very grateful. Telrose Corp, Penrose Corp, Tastykake. Everybody loves the Tastykakes always and we have enough. University of the Sciences, Lomax Companies always give. WPFI, PSDC, Philadelphia Phillies, Preferred Meals, VFW Group, Pride International, FMC, the Watson Organization, and that's a company that does painting. Use them. The Enterprise Center and Della Clark, Culpepper Rose, Visit Philadelphia, Driscoll, thank you, Penn Medicine, Watts Facility Solutions, Campus. All my -some of them came today.
