Thank you, Mr. President. I just want to remind everybody that we will be having a workshop honoring MED Week tomorrow. Our workshop is dealing with the state of minority businesses in Pennsylvania. Many of us have been rooting along Governor Wolf in his newly minted administration, but what we also want to do is bring home the bacon, veggie bacon based on genetically modified foods, but bacon nonetheless, for small businesses in this area that need these type of contract opportunities. To that end, my colleagues, Stated Meeting October 1, 2015 members of the State House, are promoting this workshop. Councilman Henon, Councilman Johnson, Councilwoman Reynolds Brown, Councilwoman Blackwell and others, Councilwoman Sanchez, are all trying to get as many minority female companies to this workshop to take advantage of this. We are joined by State Representative Dawkins, State Representative Jordan Harris, and newly minted State Representative Donna Johnson Bullock to try to bring that bacon home. So we encourage people to come out to the pipeline, 30 South 15th, and it's a place that was discovered in a lot of senses by Councilman Johnson. It's a young, hip, kind of entrepreneurial environment. I felt ancient over there by way of -- but they welcomed me nonetheless, old ideas, new ideas getting together, and it's an eclectic, almost Google-like environment to have this in. And it's important for that demographic, Stated Meeting October 1, 2015 millennials, because they are more entrepreneurial than prior generations. They are more independently thinking and global in their pursuit of profits. So we want to encourage them to take advantage of some of the old procurement opportunities as well as some of the newer opportunities that this progressive demographic has. Thank you, Mr. President. Two announcements and brief remarks. In the spirit of wellness and fitness, I simply want to remind members and anyone who is interested about getting ready for the holiday to join us tomorrow at noon so we can get our biweekly walk in, be more physically Stated Meeting October 1, 2015 for the calories that we're going to consume in about 60 days. Additionally, with regards to MED Week, for ten years my office has worked with PIDC and co-hosted a forum for MBE/WBEs. Tomorrow Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and I are inviting anyone who is interested to come learn and hear about opportunities that will be presented to us by way of the Democratic National Convention. And that's not tomorrow. That is scheduled for Tuesday, October the 6th, where Councilman Johnson and I will be at the PIDC, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard listening to those affiliated with the Democratic National Convention to make sure all those who get business opportunities, that that group looks like Philadelphia. Lastly, Mr. President, I join the many who were struck this week with the congressional hearings on Planned Parenthood. Now, for the record, Planned Parenthood is an organization that's 98 Stated Meeting October 1, 2015 show up. And it's the nation's leading provider of high-quality, affordable healthcare, not just for women but for men and young people, and it's the nation's leading provider of sex education. Now, I was pleased to watch the President, Cecile Richards, who was not at all rattled by the curve-ball questioning and, quite frankly, the misleading, non-factual, false data. She was professional, intelligent, poised, and she came armed with the facts. And we know when you have the facts, they tend to be the game changer in debates. For all the hoopla and the distractions presented by a few of the congressional members who want to make Planned Parenthood what it's not, here are a few of the facts that are compelling in this debate: Number one, according to USA Today, two-thirds of those surveyed, 65 percent, say that funding should continue Stated Meeting October 1, 2015 98-year-old group, 65 percent. Twenty-nine percent say it should be cut off. But the fact that's more compelling for me is that when you look at the totality of the services they provide, only 3 percent go towards abortion services, 3 percent of their budget. Eleven percent goes towards WIC services, family practice services for families and men and women who are not able to afford those services. So too often when we hear the debate and to those who think Planned Parenthood is a non-stop abortion shop, I would advise them to do what we all need to do and what congressional members need to do - check their source. Thank you, Stated Meeting October 1, 2015 foremost, I'd like to thank all of our citizens in this great City of Philadelphia in making sure that we had a great weekend when the Pope came to visit our city. So I think that was great. No major incidents that put a black eye on our city. And so I just commend the Administration, but also all the citizens for putting our best foot forward and putting our city in a great light. Second, I served in the State House prior to me coming to City Council and I remember us delivering a budget in late October, and I want to also -- I want to always remind us until we get a budget done that we still have a school district that's in crisis. And so although we're doing our part here in the City of Philadelphia, hopefully our former colleagues on both sides of the aisle in Harrisburg find a way to get a budget done so the schools I know for a Stated Meeting October 1, 2015 the City of Philadelphia, particularly in the 2nd Councilmanic District, can have the type of resource that they need so our young people can continue receiving a quality education. I want to invite everyone to participate in my 5K run/walk against domestic violence, which will take place on October the 17th. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and I will be partnering with a group called Speranza Human Compassion Project. And so I want to encourage all of my colleagues to sign up a team. I want to thank my colleague Councilman Bill Greenlee for being the first Councilmember to step up and pledge his support for this very, very critically important issue that sometimes flies under the radar. So I'm just honored to have been asked to participate and organize this walk as a male standing up on the issue of domestic violence, because I Stated Meeting October 1, 2015 And so I just want to encourage all my colleagues, encourage everyone who can hear me to participate in our annual 5K run/walk, which will take place on Saturday, October the 17th at FDR Park.
