Thank you, Council President. I do want to take a moment to acknowledge my colleague Councilwoman Sharon Vaughn for bringing this resolution forward and making sure this body was not quiet regarding -- which I believe is a very, very significant issue that has taken place as relates to the Stated Meeting 135 5/25/2023 5/25/23 - STATED - 2ND READING two young men who were on the lam for about several different days that put all of our lives in jeopardy based upon their backgrounds. And so at the end of the day, our body is charged with making sure that the various City agencies that receive a budget from us are held accountable, making sure that the wider public is safe. And so I want to again thank Councilwoman Sharon Vaughn and look forward to this hearing, because at the end of the day, I can't remember in my lifetime -- and I'll be 50 this year -that I have seen anything of such egregious behavior have taken place as relates to these two individuals going on the lam inside the streets of Philadelphia. And, again, for every day that they were out, you know, it put everybody's lives in danger, because people can resolve to desperate measures in situations like that. Stated Meeting 136 5/25/2023 5/25/23 - STATED - 2ND READING And I just want to thank our Philadelphia Police Department, our U.S. Marshals, FBI, who all stepped up to the plate, the Sheriff's Office, to make sure that these two individuals were taken back into custody, because at the end of the day, like enough is enough, right? And, you know, I got children, I got a wife, I got nieces, I got nephews, right? If they want a program, we'll support them. Like we invest in intervention and prevention, but at the end of the day, right, my primary purpose is to make sure also my children, the families that I represent, and everybody else in the City is safe. And so I do thank those individuals who apprehended them but, most importantly, I want to thank my colleague for saying, you know what, let's do this hearing on this particular topic. And I'll also just mention in the spirit of my former colleague Stated Meeting 137 5/25/2023 5/25/23 - STATED - 2ND READING Councilwoman Helen Gym, this is not the first time that we've actually addressed issues regarding what's taking place on State Road as well as my colleague Councilman, Chairperson of Public Safety, Curtis Jones, who we got up plenty of mornings during the pandemic to kind of find out what's going on up there on State Road. And so I thank you very much, Councilwoman Vaughn. I look forward to the hearing. Thank you.
And a resolution declaring June 5th to 11th, 2023 as Disability Pride Week in the City of Philadelphia, introduced today by Councilwoman Brooks.
Thank you, Council President. Stated Meeting 138 5/25/2023 5/25/23 - STATED - 2ND READING Today I'm introducing a resolution to designate the week of June 5th, 2023 as Disability Pride Week in the City of Philadelphia. Sixteen percent of Philadelphians have a physical, emotional, or cognitive disability. That means that we all know and love someone with a disability. And we know that our society can make it very difficult for our loved ones to have disabilities meet their most basic needs and demands, from navigating the streets and sidewalks to assessing healthcare and education. We are grateful to the many leaders of the Disability Rights Movement over the years who have transformed our society by redefining the word "public," who transformed our society by insisting that a bus that is accessible to most riders is not really truly public transportation, a classroom that welcomes most students is not truly public education, and a government that's open Stated Meeting 139 5/25/2023 5/25/23 - STATED - 2ND READING to most residents does not truly serve all the people. The Disability Rights Movement has shown us and continues to show us that public spaces, public transportation, public education, and public services are not truly public unless they're accessible to all of us. Every day in Philadelphia as people with disabilities face the barriers that society places in their way, they do more than overcome them to meet life's basic demands. They become that to make Philadelphia a better home for all of us. They strengthen our city with their joy, tenacity, and they show us what it means to embrace difference. By recognizing Disability Pride Week in Philadelphia, we honor and celebrate the vibrancy and resilience while continuing to fight for a just, equal, and accessible Philadelphia. With that, I move for the adoption of this resolution. Stated Meeting 140 5/25/2023 5/25/23 - STATED - 2ND READING (Duly seconded.)
