And an Ordinance amending Chapter 17-1300 of the Philadelphia Code, entitled "Philadelphia 21st Century Minimum Wage and Benefits Standard," by repealing Section 17-1311, entitled "Living Wage Advisory Committee," and by enacting a new Section 17-1311, entitled "Living Wage and Benefits Review Committee."

And a Resolution authorizing Council's Committee on Public Health and Human Services to hold public hearings for the purpose of examining existing programs and services available to at-risk adolescent girls; examining methods of continuing and strengthening such programs and developing new programs; and exploring potential sources of funding in order to encourage young women to follow pathways that lead to the completion of their education, economic independence and good citizenship.

And no matter where you stand on Dr. Ackerman and her leaving, it was good that 150,000 plus students went back to school. And whether you were at Lamberton High School or newly founded Keith Reed's Academy that caters to the boys that are from a single-parent household, or whether you were at the new West Philadelphia High School in the 3rd District, or even some of the adult classes that have actually started on continuing education partnerships with Calvary Baptist Church in West Philadelphia, and Harcum Junior College in a two-year degree program, or in the 7th Councilmanic District, Congresro -- they also are opening up a satellite shop -- at the end of the day, it is about producing a productive work force. Thank you, Madam President. As a former teacher, I would give my colleague, Councilman Jones, an A plus. Very, very well spoken. I rise today as a former teacher, as a parent of a 10th grader, wherein I have 36 more months to get her ready, to launch her. But I also like to speak as Vice Chair of City Council's Committee on Education. I, like Councilman Jones, would be remiss not to acknowledge and recognize that this indeed was the first week of back to school for our children. Under the new interim leadership, I would submit that we had a strong first day back to school for our students, parents and care-givers. We all have heard the old adage, and it bears repeating, in the words of Marian Wright Edelman: "If we don't stand up for children, then we certainly don't stand CITY COUNCIL HEARING JOHN J. S.
