Councilwoman Gauthier

Thank you, Council President. I know that there has been a lot of very spirited testimony about the 47th Street bills that passed today, so I wanted to take a moment to address some of that. I pushed these bills very strongly that this is the right decision for the overall safety of all users on 57th -- or 47th Street. This is an especially meaningful decision for me because of the three elementary schools along the street that draw hundreds of West Philadelphia children every single day and for the woman who lost her life as a result of injuries she suffered as a pedestrian getting hit by a speeding car last summer. Any complicated infrastructure project that crosses multiple neighborhoods is going to have disagreeing perspectives. I accept that as an understandable part of the engagement process, but OTIS and my office did a lot of engagement before introducing these will not accept is pretending like a safety problem doesn't exist because we have a philosophical disagreement on bike lanes or that we didn't listen to community feedback or that somehow reducing car traffic is going to make problems worse on an already bad street. That is not true and that's why I put these bills forward. And lastly, I received a letter from a young constituent very neatly written on composition paper that I'd like to share. It says, Dear Councilmember Gauthier, we should keep the bike lane on 47th Street because it will slow down traffic. Also, grown-ups cannot ride their bikes on the sidewalks. It will be safer. Thank you. From Molly. safe streets, I am legislating for Molly and all of our children and I'll do it again and again and again. Thank you. (Applause.)

Council President Johnson

Very well said, Member Gauthier. Chair recognizes Councilmember Jeffrey Jay Young.

Councilman Young

Thank you, Mr. President. Really brief. Today members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776 held a rally this morning at the Whole Foods along with their supporters, at the Whole Foods on Pennsylvania Avenue, to demand that Amazon respects the vote of the workers and honor that union and come to the table. the first Whole Foods to unionize in the country, and Amazon has been using stall tactics to recognize this union. They filed objections with the National Labor Relations Board and they're continuing to fire folks who, from the union's perspective, believed that they were fired because they were pro union. And we just want those corporations to do right by the workers and residents of the City of Philadelphia and come to the table to collectively bargain because they deserve to be well paid. They deserve the benefits. They deserve the dignity that being in the union can provide for them. They voted for that. That's something that they have the right to do and the Amazon should respect their rights. you, Mr. President.

Council President Johnson

Thank you. Councilmember Dr. Nina Ahmad.

Councilwoman Ahmad

Thank you, Council President. Colleagues, I rise today to recognize Melanoma Awareness Month, a time to educate, reflect and recommit ourselves to fighting one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. Melanoma is often preventable and when caught early, it is treatable. Yet far too many of our constituents, particularly people of color, are diagnosed too late because of misinformation and lack of access to dermatology care. That must change. Raising awareness saves lives. Promoting detection, equitable care and community education is not just a public health issue. It is an issue of equity and justice. And we must ensure that our residents know melanoma does not discriminate and neither should our health care systems. In this spirit of public service and commitment to equity, I want to take a moment to honor one of my mentors and one of Philadelphia's giants, Bruce Crawley. Bruce has dedicated his life to uplifting our communities through business, through advocacy and through the relentless pursuit of justice. As a trailblazer in marketing and public relations and as a founder of the African American Chamber of Commerce, Bruce has always pushed us to think His guidance has been instrumental in my own journey from community advocate to public servant. Bruce taught me that authentic leadership requires listening deeply, serving selflessly and never compromising on your principles. Today as we recognize Melanoma Awareness Month and reflect on the importance of access, awareness and advocacy, I can't think of a better example than Bruce Crawley, a man who never stopped fighting for what's right. I also want to thank and wish our young intern right behind me, if he would stand up. Rudrannahan(ph) Rudy Shahid, he has been with us. He's a senior at Masterman, and he's off to Cornell to study economics, and he has been a real asset to our office. Even stay, we definitely felt his presence and we wish him very well. Thank you. (Applause.)

Council President Johnson

Masterman and Cornell. Well done, young man. Let's give him another round of applause. (Applause.)

Council President Johnson

Councilmember Cindy Bass.

Councilwoman Bass

Thank you, Mr. President. Today I was proud to introduce a resolution that honors an extraordinary leader and my dear friend Myra Brown as she completes her tenure as Board Chair of Women's Way, one of Philadelphia's premier organizations representing, supporting and advocating for women. Myra has made history as to serve in this role. And in doing so, she has transformed the organization and deepened its commitment to equity, inclusion and women's empowerment. Over seven years on the board, including her time as Chair, Myra brought bold vision and tireless advocacy. Under her leadership, Women's Way expanded its impact, championed civic engagement and led vital racial equity initiatives that helped shape a more just Philadelphia. But her leadership doesn't end there. Through her other projects and businesses, she has created pathways to meaningful -

Councilwoman Ahmad

Oh, sorry.

Councilwoman Bass

Through her other projects and businesses, she's created pathways to meaningful employment and model the power of women-led entrepreneurship. Her work spans industries from workforce development to the arts, including her visionary role bringing jazz from Montreux, Switzerland to Philadelphia. Myra is not just a leader. She is a builder of opportunities, a champion of justice and a relentless force for good. And on behalf of the Philadelphia City Council, we want to thank Myra for her service, her spirit and her enduring legacy here in the city. Thank you so much, Mr. President.

Council President Johnson

Thank you, Member Bass, and job well done. Myra Brown -

Councilwoman Bass
