Councilman Rizzo

Council President Verna

Councilman Kenney

Okay. Am I recognized?

Council President Verna

Yes.

Councilman Kenney

Thank you, Madam President. Last week in the midst of the confusion of our amending the budget and trying to find $10 million worth of additional support for the School District and all the other things we were doing, we had an opportunity to vote on a resolution that was sponsored by Councilwoman Brown, and I voted for that resolution. And I believe in a woman's right to choose, but I'm angry with myself for not abstaining, because I violated my own belief in the position I hold and, that is, that that position is personal and private. The decision to make reproductive choices are personal and private. Religious beliefs are personal and private. And in many ways, we publicized that privacy and probably should not have done so. If I had abstained last week, we wouldn't be sitting here talking about this resolution today and it would have been gone. I believe in a woman's right to choose. That's my personal and private belief. I would simply like to go back to where we were before last week and make this a personal and private matter between a woman and her doctor, her family or whoever else she chooses to bring into that decision, but it's not something I think we should have forced on the public at large. Thank you.

Council President Verna
