Thank you so much. Today I've come just to rise to say thank you. I want to thank all of you who are here, and that means from my colleagues to our staff, to all the people who work here and service us, from the cleaners to the Sergeant-At-Arms, to all who help us. I am grateful. I'm grateful and if -thank you for the flowers, and if you look on my desk, you will see one plaque. I received some 50 plaques, and I brought down only one, and that is one I've just received about a month ago honoring Lucien Blackwell, who has been gone all this time. (Applause.)
And I brought that down because I started off in that seat. You know, many years ago, newcomers couldn't sit on the front row. Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 to have -- you know, you had to be around a while, but I was allowed to sit in that seat because that's where Lucien Blackwell sat. So that seat has been occupied by us for a long, long time, a long, long time. (Applause.)
I want to mention my staff, who some of whom passed on. You know, I consider them family. And many of you will remember Lester Brown. He was my Chief of Staff. He passed away, as did Dan Lyons. Dan Lyons was our first staff member. When Lu started, he had only one person. That was me. I was so grateful when I got one more staff member. That was Dan Lyons. But he's certainly passed on. Jim Hughes was in the 60th Ward. He's passed on, but there's so many other people. Thank you, Joey T, for being here. But I want to thank them. They're all over there, from Belinda to Ibn to Paulette to Penni over there doing Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 know she's going right -she's been doing housing and homelessness for 23 years. So we know that's where she's going. To John Fenton, to Tim, to Marty, who sits in the back office, to Roxanne, my attorney, to all of you, to Tootie. She's been volunteering for me ever since she retired from the City. Thank you, Tony McIntosh, Jr. We worked with Junior and Senior, and I've seen our friend from state committee and so many people who are here. And Alice Wright that I won't mention. Suffice it to say that I am grateful to all of you for what you've done. I'm grateful that was one of my ministers who gave the invocation. And Charlene Holloway I'm going call on in one moment and ask her to complete my remarks, but I wanted to say all these years have really been -- I've enjoyed each and every day of it. I know I say that often, because I know this is my mission. We all have a mission, Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 We all have a mission. I learned mine early. Lu had his. I picked it up from him. And I'm grateful for all the churches I received, from Holy Apostles and the Mediator, thank you. Stephanie, we were honored there, to Glen's church, Christ Lutheran, to Zion Baptist, to so many churches that we've been -- Church of Christian Compassion. In fact, I have a new painting. On the bottom of it it says "West is Best," because you all know that's mine. I give it to them. So the young man who is head of PEC, his daughter painted it and with me in many poses and put at the bottom "West is Best." But there are so many ways and so many people I have to thank, and I'm still being honored. We'll be honored Friday night. I've been honored from the bottom of my area from Mantua. They've honored me, to LA21. You go to Cobbs Creek. Tuesday I'll be honored at Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 Southwest, Southwest Business Service, Cobbs Creek, you name it, and I'm grateful to each and every person. So I only have one thing that I can say. I thought about what I should say, because I don't want to talk about -- 45 years is a long time. I won't begin to talk about that at Jihad, but I want to say, as I've tried to say today, that I never could have made it without you. I want to ask Charlene Holloway to come up. She will say this for me, because I would never have made it without each and every person in this room. I'm so grateful for you. I thank God for you. And I will never, Mr. President, forget any of you. Thank you. (Applause.)

Thank you. That's Charlene Holloway. Let me say a special thanks to John Christmas. I love you, my brother. I see Mike over there. You know, I'm blessed, because most people don't have the same closeness on both sides of the family. I have the Brooks side and I have the Blackwell side. They were all at my homeless party with some 4,000 homeless people last night. They've been here all day. That's Sis and Joe there. You see her on the front row. They are the front row. That's my sister and my brother-in-law. (Applause.)
You see Erica behind them. She worked for me for a minute. And I want to mention -- I didn't mention Waadeah Floyd who is here, who was here until she got sick when her mother died and didn't come back. I Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 Jeff who worked with me who is part of the staff too. You know, once you connect with me, you in trouble. We keep all our people. But I want to thank all of you as well. I love you all. God bless you all. Thank you. (Standing ovation.)
And I'd now like to ask my brother from another mother, as I affectionately call him in the Fifth District, Councilman Bill Greenlee. (Standing ovation.)
See, I said I wasn't going to get emotional. Thank you, Mr. President. First, let me recognize the other Councilmembers who are preparing to take leave today. It has been a pleasure serving with a dedicated public servant like Councilman Taubenberger, even when we occasionally disagreed, sir. I Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 lot, a whole lot, about Germany, everything German, and I look forward to attending that soccer game we've been talking about for a long time. Councilwoman Reynolds Brown like you see on issues important to women, children, and health and the health of all citizens will always be remembered. And as with everything Blondell was involved with, it will stand out in bold capital letters, underlined, with multiple exclamation points. And I think as we just saw, anyone who has been around City Hall these past years knows that when discussing those who need help the most and who helps those people, three words immediately come to mind: Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell. Her work will be felt around Philadelphia for decades. It was an honor to serve with all three of you. As for me, almost 40 years ago, with less weight and a whole lot more Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 hair, I started working as a staff member here in City Council. By the way, at the robust salary of $10,500 a year. It got me out on the weekends. What can I tell you? And as I attend my final Council meeting today, I would wrap up my feelings in one three-word sentence: I was fortunate. First, I was fortunate to have for 26 years a boss but, more importantly, a mentor in Councilman David Cohen. (Applause.)
Councilman Cohen made it clear to us that government was there to serve people and to help people, and I hope in the 13 years that I served here through legislation I sponsored and supported and services my staff provided, I adhered to that belief. Dave and I may not have agreed on everything. We had different styles and different approaches, but I hope Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 in a while he occasionally -I said I wasn't going to do this. I occasionally hope he looks down and approves of what he saw. By the way, on a lighter note, I think many of us know that Dave was strongly against consent agendas. So sometimes like today when I voted aye on all bills, I swear that desk and chair was vibrating a little bit. I was also fortunate to interact with the people of Philadelphia over these many years and to have the support of so many, including the leaders of the democratic party, organized labor, many varied interest groups and, of course, the everyday citizens. I will be forever grateful for the support they gave me. I was fortunate to work with the dedicated employees and staffs in the City government, but particularly here in Council. As Councilwoman Blackwell said, everyone here does a great job, and I Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 many times that we are extremely lucky to have the talented individuals we have here. Thanks to all of them for what they do and for being a friend of mine. And speaking of staffs, I was very, very, very fortunate to have the great people I've had on my staff, both past and present, a number of them over here right now. They have had the very difficult task of making me look good, and they more than did their best. I'm proud that one former staff member now serves in the State House of Representatives and another heads a Governor's commission. Some have started or about to start a happy retirement. That was Verna Tyner, in case you didn't know. And I believe Philadelphia is lucky because the others will remain in City government. Thanks to all of you. Wait a minute. I'm not finished yet, not finished yet. Almost finished, guys. Of course I'm very fortunate to have served here in Council with such outstanding dedicated public servants. I know how hard all of you work to serve the citizens of Philadelphia. Mr. President, I've learned so much from all of you, and I hope I added a little something over the past years and did it the right way, even when sometimes we disagreed. To that end, I feel one of the best compliments I ever received was from our late friend, Councilwoman Joan Krajewski, who once told me, you know, Greenlee, for a bleeding heart liberal, you're really not a bad guy. Last, but certainly not least, I have been very fortunate to have as a number one supporter, coach, and trainer Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 of 30 years. Leslie would be here today -(Applause.)
-- but she's doing her job teaching at Community College. We'll soon find out how much she likes having me around a little bit more. So let me finish by just reminding everyone, like I said, it's been 40 years, and old habits die hard. So if sometime next year you see me getting off the 48 bus over here, start walking towards City Hall and stop short and sheepishly turn around, as I said, old habits die hard, so bear with me. So in the end, it's been a great ride, everybody. I have indeed been fortunate. Thank you, Mr. President. Thank you, everybody. (Standing ovation.)

Council President, thank you very, very much. This will be brief, because I was here the briefest of all the graduating class of 2019. But I first got into this building was because of Councilwoman Joan Krajewski. The second time I got in was because Councilman Jack Kelly. I served as his Chief of Staff. The third time I got in was because of the people, and I appreciate that very, very much. That meant a lot to me. And the first four people I want to thank is my grandchildren, Ava, Ali, Cecelia, and Georgie, who sat Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 entire process. Stand up. (Applause.)
And you couldn't do this without the support of your family. My wife, Joanne, who is working. I wonder how she's going to like me being home. I think she's going to tell me to get the heck out and get a job, and I think I will. But I also want to thank my son, Matthew Taubenberger. (Applause.)
My daughter, Elizabeth Clark and her husband George, who is the reminder to me, because I grew up in a German neighborhood, of remembering all things German, and it was drummed into me by my parents, who I can't thank enough for this. But I couldn't have done it alone. I did it with the support of the people of the City of Philadelphia, but my colleagues taught me so much, my 16 Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 made me a better person, a better man, and I leave here a stronger person and a wiser person. And, Council President, I can't thank you enough for your leadership. I have seen you in difficult times, and I appreciate it and I learned a lot. I can't say enough about my staff. They made me look good at every moment every time. I'll just quickly mention their names because, well, it's nice to have your name mentioned. Vincent Emmanuel; Kevin Carroll; Lou Feinberg; Gary Grisafi; John Perzel, Jr.; Aaron Dimick, who is back there, who was with me at every hearing, every session; Chris Wright, my Legislative Assistant. And we had interns as well in Anna Way and Neise Latti. It's the staff that makes you look good. It's the fact that this building is maintained. It's the people that clean my office. It's the support staff, and it's my colleagues. I walk away a wiser person. Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 at the election results, well, I lost, but I won so much more in experience and friendship that came out of this Chamber. I can't thank you all enough, and I appreciate the time I served with you. And I'm not that old. I'll be around somehow, because my wife is going to kick me the heck out and say, do something. Good afternoon, everyone. This time of year always is very celebratory for lots of reasons, but it's also often sad because of the folks that you no longer have in your life, parents, grandparents. And although this is a transition for you guys, I just want to let you know that you've all put your own imprint on this body over the years. Al, for your support for small business; Jannie, you taught me about what it's like or what homeless people go Stated Meeting December 12, 2019 why they need special attention and not just be moved away from our view, and you put humanity into the homeless situation, and I appreciate that; Blondell, the arts and culture that you've helped and your picking up the baton on the environment has been wonderful; and, Bill, I can't think of anybody that cares more about stopping domestic violence and helping women and folks who are being abused. I know you've always stepped to the fore and we've always followed your lead on that. I just want to wish you all, most of all, best of health, best of luck, and I'm sure we'll see you around in some capacity. So thank you very much, and thanks to all of you.
